Jana Ann Harrison-Cruse was born October 18, 1961, in Cincinnati, Ohio to the late James Hurt and Oukreda Harrison. She passed away on June 10.
Jana graduated from Taft High School in 1980. She married Lavern McNary in 1982 and went on to join the Army and National Guard where she was the recipient of the Army Achievement Medal; the Good Conduct Medal, and the Army Service Medal. Jana pursued her education at Cincinnati State College during these years.
In 1994, Jana joined the Cincinnati Police Department where she served in Districts 4 and 5. She worked as a Neighborhood Liaison Officer in District 4 where she served the communities of North Avondale and Paddock Hills. Her last assignment was Recruiting and Background Investigations before retiring in April 2016.
In 1995, Jana married William Cruse. She finished her Bachelor’s degree from Union Institute in 2012 and went on to finish her Master’s degree in Criminal Justice in 2014 at the University of Cincinnati.
Jana loved to cook and was often called upon to make a tasty dish for an upcoming event. She was best known for her upscale Masionette dish, whose affluent name was Lyonnaise potatoes. We who knew her fondly called them Potatoes and Onions. She really got a kick out of that!
During family gatherings you could always find Jana at the card table, playing with family and friends.
As years went on she became conscious of the need to help young people in our city. She was most proud of joining the Men and Women of Blue “Right to Read Program” reading to third grade children and assisting them in passing their proficiency tests. Their first class passed in 2015 with a 90% proficiency rate!
Jana passed away on June 10, 2016. She leaves to cherish her memory her kind and loving daughter, Lakeya affectionately known as Ke-Ke, and her beautiful granddaughters, who were the love of her life; Kalyce and Deyani.
She also leaves to cherish her sisters, Mary, Elizabeth, Deborah and Barbara (deceased), brothers David, Harry, James, Christopher and Michael (deceased) and a host of other family members and friends.
Friends…..life is but a memory…..have you started creating yours? Jana
