New School Montessori preprimary students studied some of the works of TNSM neighbor and artist, John Lanzador. John grew up in the Philippines, seeing local artisans creating artwork from wood. John was inspired by the people and animals around him and has spent his career depicting Asian animals in woodcarvings, prints and paintings that represent parts of his personality.
Students used impressions from the characters in John’s wood carvings in a printmaking project. Their black and white prints of birds fluttered in the breeze beautifully adorning the walls of the classroom, awaiting their flight to each child’s home once they’d dried.
Be sure to check out John Lanzador’s work in the Rosenthal Center (children’s section of the Cincinnati Art Museum) starting May 7.
