2024 list of Ohio’s most endangered historic sites includes Grace Church / Gabriel’s Place on Reading Road

This news is from our friends at Cincinnati Preservation Association. The 2024 List Of Ohio’s Most Endangered Historic Sites from Preservation Ohio, the state’s original statewide historic preservation organization, has announced the official List of Ohio’s Most Endangered Historic Sites for 2024.

Included among the list of 14 sites is Cincinnati’s Grace Church / Gabriel’s Place. St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church, formerly known as Grace Church, is a historic church in Cincinnati, Ohio.

It is the only church in the North Avondale neighborhood listed on the National Register of Historic Places, an honor it received on September 16, 1982. Four of the original stained glass windows carry the signature Tiffany Studios, New York City, but were sold to The Cincinnati Art Museum to fund renovations on the main sanctuary in 2010.

St. Michael’s Church was closed on Easter Sunday 2008, and in 2011 the building became home to Gabriel’s Place. Their core principles were to be a food resource, to build community through healthy food, and to empower urban youth to achieve their highest potential.

The church now faces demolition. Images and plans for the site are outlined on Avondale Development Corporation’s website and include:

Remodel existing annex building into mixed-use space containing approx. 2,500 sf community space.
Construct one building into up to 76 residential rental units, consisting of approx. 53,696 sf of residential space.
Construct one building into approx. 5,800 sf of community outreach space.
Construct one surface parking lot into 69 spaces. Construction is said to begin in Fall 2024.

Take Action Contact the Avondale Development Corporation and ask them to incorporate the church into the plans for redevelopment of the site.
