North Avondale residents recognized by Cincinnati Horticultural Society

Angela Wilson and Kelly Euller were presented the Garden Recognition Award by the Cincinnati Horticulture Society at the annual event held on October 2, 2024, at Kenwood Country Club.

“Red Bud Avenue in North Avondale is the right address for the garden surrounding this 1923 Tudor-style home. Most distinctive are the three tiers of plantings that rise in the rear. Each tier features a different combination of perennials. Tier number one has different varieties of Phlox along with Bee Balm, Solomon Seal and more. Echinacea, Baptisia and Butterfly Bush are set out on Tier number two. The third level is mostly a happy Hosta Shade Garden. There are places to sit and enjoy this pollinator-friendly landscape. A stonewall is graced with an espaliered New Dawn climbing rose. Creative annual pots and a raised garden bed with specific space for herbs are all beautifully maintained — well mulched and composted.”

Angela started gardening in the late 90s when she and her family lived in central Massachusetts. They lived in a colonial house built in the 1700s and inherited a garden from the previous owner who was a master gardener. While raising small children, she was determined not to “kill the garden.” Angela remarks, “I really learned from my friends and neighbors. Gardening is a labor of love and provides lots of therapy — digging in the dirt just feels good and you just never know how it’s going to turn out. [It’s] a lot like life.”

At their house on Red Bud, Angela focuses more on perennials and annuals. Kelly focuses on the trees and shrubs and also designed the third tier with the fire pit. “The gardens are still a work in progress. There is always lots to do but we love it!”
