President’s Message – August 2025

“The greatness of a community is most accurately measured by the compassionate actions of its members.” – Coretta Scott King

Dear North Avondale Family,

August is here, and with it comes the warmth of summer still in the air , and the momentum of a community that continues to show up for one another in big and small ways. Every smile exchanged, every hand extended, every shared moment builds the North Avondale we know and love.

Just this past week, on August 5, I attended National Night Out in Bond Hill with my son and niece. It was a vibrant evening filled with music, laughter, and heartfelt connections. From fire truck tours to SWAT demonstrations, the event reminded me how powerful it is when residents and officers come together as neighbors first. One officer’s pure delight over receiving a little motorcycle cop duck captured exactly what this event is all about, the power of small gestures to make a lasting impact.

I want to give a special shout-out to our incredible admin, Amy, and her daughter, Eleanor, for the brilliant duck idea. These little tokens of joy were an absolute hit, both at the CSO Symphony event and again at National Night Out. Amy and Eleanor are a force to be reckoned with and have become a pillar of strength in our organization. Their creativity, energy, and commitment to community remind us all how much impact two dedicated people can have.

Looking ahead, August brings more opportunities to gather, grow, and get involved. Events like Before You BBQ at Withrow University High School and The New School Montessori’s fall open house are right around the corner. And soon, we’ll be back together for our General Body Meeting on Tuesday, September 9, at the North Avondale Rec Center.

To everyone who’s been contributing, tending our gardens, attending events, and lifting others up, thank you. And to anyone who’s been thinking about getting involved, there’s no better time than now. Every voice, every effort, every neighbor matters.

Together, let’s keep building a North Avondale where kindness is the default, unity is the goal, and every single person feels valued.

With gratitude and love,

Dawn Johnson

President, North Avondale Neighborhood Association
