The Mattie Legacy Project invites the community to Before Care Had a System, a free Breast Cancer Awareness Month conversation inspired by longtime North Avondale resident Mattie Bell Kinney and her breast cancer advocacy during the 1960s and 70s.
Mattie raised her family at 409 Clinton Springs Avenue while becoming deeply involved in Cincinnati’s civil rights, community and health advocacy work. Her story will serve as the starting point for a present-day conversation about breast cancer awareness, Black health history, medical trust, survivorship, caregiving, access to care and community support.
The conversation will be moderated by Cincinnati Vice Mayor Jan-Michele Lemon Kearney and will include healthcare, cancer-support, survivor, caregiver and community voices, including Dr. Karen Bankston, Tyra Oldham, PhD, and Asha Rone of Cancer Support Community.
