President’s Message: February 2023

As we look forward to longer days and warmer spring weather, make your resolutions come true by getting involved in our neighborhood. Join monthly NANA general meetings held the second Tuesday of each month at 6:30 pm in the North Avondale Montessori cafeteria. If you have a special interest, please let me know to add to the agenda.

Be on the lookout for the newly-formatted NANA Newsletter along with the launch of the redesigned websites for both NANA and NABA. This year will be exciting.  The Law and Safety and Zoning Committees have had many successes. We have a new stop sign at Wedgewood and Dickson near the school, a success in shutting down a group home on Dana and many other issues raised by the NANA residents. NANA is currently requesting the City add a new stop sign at intersection of Lenox and Glen Lyon. The Zoning Committee continues working to resolve building code violation and zoning issues on Clinton Springs and Mitchell Ave.

Most encouraging is the neighborhood support for the opposition of the proposed Victory Vistas, a 50 unit, four story apartment building at the intersection of Victory Parkway and Asmann Ave. NANA needs your help to “Stop the Rush” to build the Victory Vistas Development letter writing campaign to our Mayor and Council Members. Our opposition is based on the following:

1) Environmental concerns of the property soil have shown contamination with Naphthalene, listed by the EPA as a hazardous air pollutant and a potential carcinogen.  The developer, Chinedum Ndukwe, is proposing a collection system from the contaminated soil and venting up through the building top and disbursing into the air.

2) The property is part of the Hillside Overlay District. HOD requires additional soil testing and additional building requirements.

3) Asmann and Ledgewood streets cannot tolerate any additional on street parking.

Make a resolution to get more involved in North Avondale. These issues are important to all of our families and friends. This year we plan to begin work on the rewrite of the North Avondale Master Plan and potentially develop ways to work with each of our neighborhood schools.   Please consider giving back and volunteering a few hours each month.  NANA also asks that each of you add us to your gift giving list by visiting the NANA website to make a donation. We need your support to continue making our neighborhood a better place to live and raise our families.
