President’s Message – May 2026

“Integrity sometimes requires standing alone. But history has a way of revealing who protected the peace — and who protected the dysfunction.”  – Dr. Odell Owens

Serving as President of NANA for the past two years has been both an honor and a deeply meaningful experience. Community leadership is never simple. It requires vision, resilience, collaboration, and a willingness to make difficult decisions in service of the greater good.

Over these past two years, we have worked hard to strengthen community engagement, increase neighborhood visibility, support residents, and continue building momentum for North Avondale’s future. I am proud of the progress we have made together and grateful for every resident, volunteer, stakeholder, and board member who contributed their time and energy toward that work.

Leadership also brings challenges. Strong organizations grow through accountability, thoughtful discussion, and a shared commitment to integrity and transparency. While perspectives may differ, I believe healthy communities must continue having honest conversations about governance, communication, and the culture we create within our organizations. Silence around harmful behavior only allows division and distrust to persist.

As I navigate an urgent family matter, I am reminded that community is ultimately about people, supporting one another, showing grace under pressure, and continuing the work even during difficult seasons.

Thank you to everyone who has supported NANA’s mission and invested in North Avondale’s future over these last two years. It has been a privilege to serve this community, and I remain hopeful for NANA’s continued growth, accountability, and success moving forward.

“Communities are not divided by those who speak hard truths, but by the unwillingness to confront behaviors that quietly destroy trust, respect, and unity.”

With appreciation,

Dawn Johnson | NANA President
