Something big is happening in the neighborhood, on Ledgewood Dr. to be exact — and it’s red, round, and apparently unstoppable.
Tom Ottke’s raised garden has produced what can only be described as a tremendous tomato harvest. What began as dried heirloom tomato seeds has turned into an overflowing supply of tomatoes, with more ripening almost every day.
Now the question is no longer, “Will we have enough tomatoes?” It’s, “What exactly are we going to do with all of these tomatoes?”
Tomato sandwiches? Absolutely. Fresh salsa? Of course. Pasta sauce? Time to start simmering. Neighbors may want to stay alert for unexpected tomato deliveries appearing on doorsteps.
Beyond the fun, the harvest is a great example of a simple summer pleasure: planting something, watching it grow, and having enough success to share with others. His fall planting of radishes, garlic, and lettuce is underway.
Tom and his wife, Mary Beth, are what North Avondale neighbors are all about: creating, growing, and sharing. Stop by and say “hi” if you want to see his raised garden; summer 2027 is calling your name!
