Congratulations to the Shirley Merrick Family.
On Tuesday, November 14, 2023 the NANA General Body voted to approve the proposed City Ordinance to add a secondary street sign at Avondale Ave. and Reading Rd. The family of Shirley Merrick requested the North Avondale Neighborhood Association approve an ordinance from City of Cincinnati Vice Mayor Kearney’s office for the installation of a secondary street sign, which shall designate the naming of the intersection in North Avondale as “Shirley Merrick Way”. This ordinance will not change the name of the street, but will place a green honorary sign below the Avondale Avenue street sign.
Reverend Valdesia Merrick, who is a daughter of Shirley and Henry Merrick, held general meeting attendees spellbound with a wonderful story how two people from Harlem, New York moved to Cincinnati in 1959 and raised six children in North Avondale. After the City Council provides the final approval of the ordinance, we will invite neighbors to the official naming.
